The data center becomes as easy as the public cloud

Sweden & Martina Spa is an Italian company, an international leader in the design, production and distribution of products intended for the dental world, in particular in the implantology sector.

It uses an integrated IT infrastructure to provide services to both its customers and internal users. The problem for which the intervention of Lan & Wan Solutions was requested was the obsolescence of IT infrastructures, which had an impact on the implementation of corporate business strategies and, consequently, on the possibilities for growth. There was also the need to improve the redundancy of information to avoid data loss risks and reduce the recovery time for systems and services.

The Lan & Wan Solutions project

For innovative and dynamic companies like Sweden & Martina, the public cloud could be a “driver” for the speed with which it allows to implement the new application or service, without wasting time with the administration of the on-premise IT infrastructure, and paying the cloud only for the resources actually consumed. However, there are sensitive data, intellectual property and ‘business-critical’ applications which, for valid reasons, it is unthinkable to move lightly on the public cloud.

The Lan & Wan Solutions team has therefore developed a project proposal based on the Enterprise Cloud NUTANIX solution that exploits Hyperconvergence for Hardware Infrastructure.


The features of the NUTANIX Enterprise Cloud solution

The core of a corporate cloud is commonly called Hyperconvergence (HCI): instead of having stand-alone storage, networking and server infrastructure, HCI converges all information into a simple software-defined stack. The solution is based on web scale technologies that power some of the largest data centers in the globe.

The strength of Nutanix is ​​that it is a 100% distributed system without single points of failure with unlimited scalability and support for any use case. Deployments can start with a single node and can scale up to hundreds of nodes smoothly. Performance and capacity grow every time a node is added. Depending on the needs, the nodes can be capacitive or computational or the combination of both. This means that users only add the capacity they want to add. With a “Lego” model, provisioning and expansion of the infrastructure becomes extremely simple. Finally, with VM-centric data protection, applications are protected within the data center, in a remote data center or in the public cloud

The advantages of the solution for Sweden & Martina

    Routine management is based on a single console that displays all the information about the operation and configuration of the infrastructure. This is possible thanks to Nutanix Enterprise Cloud, which does not require specialist skills to be kept operational. The IT staff of Sweden and Martina can truly implement an innovation strategy, without being bound by the limitations of the technological infrastructure.

    The move to Nutanix – said Marco Lupatini, CIO of Sweden & Martina – was painless and without any disservice; from the following day Nutanix made it possible to manage the data center with “One Click” operations through the Prism interface, which uses automatic learning to enhance these operations. The introduction of Nutanix in the data center was a push to improve efficiency, reduce TCO and ensure quality of service.

    Capacity planning and systems usage forecasts are powered by a machine learning engine that helps proactively monitor infrastructure needs. These machine-learning operations allow Sweden’s IT team to always be at the forefront of infrastructure planning, ensuring that the company never runs out of resources needed to deliver services and applications.

    Thanks to a modular and scalable solution, aligned with the actual needs of the moment, it was also possible to reduce IT costs and divide them into individual modules.
